7th District Optimist Scholarship

The 7th District Optimist Scholarship Program offers entering college freshmen (Scholarship pool of $4000 and minimum of 2 or more Scholarships offered and minimum of $1000 each) that rank in the top twenty percent of their graduating class. College scholarship awards are for the fall semester of their first year. These awards are granted to the student and the learning institution where they have been accepted. These awards are made in addition to any scholarship, grants or other assistance that the students may receive from other sources.
Eligibility:
• Be officially enrolled for the Fall Semester at an accredited U.S. 4-year college or community college
• Rank in the top 20% of your accredited high school graduating class
• Must graduate from high school in the Spring from Students in school boundaries of CHS,LHS and SMRHS.
Procedures:
• Submit an official high school transcript with all academic work posted through the junior year. Transcript must also indicate official numeric rank. (photocopies and computer printouts are not acceptable; official transcripts can be obtained from your registrar’s office)
• Current resume including activities, work, volunteerism.
• Three letters of recommendation (family excluded)
• Essay describing your career ambitions in 250 words or less
• Completed application form which is available from your high school guidance counselors
Scholarship Guidelines:
Each year, the 7th District Optimist Club awards a 2 or more scholarships and minimum of $1000 each on the following criteria:
• The applicant must be a resident of St. Mary’s County.
• Applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Applicant must demonstrate accomplishments in 4 of the five following categories:
1. special talents
2. leadership
3. obstacles overcome
4. unique endeavors
5. community involvement
